FAQ's
How do I season my grill and hotplate?
Our grills and hotplates arrive as unseasoned raw carbon steel. It is important to season your grills and hotplates so you can benefit from the natural non-stick coating. The seasoning is more vulnerable when it is young, but overtime a durable natural seasoning will form.
- When first recieving your grill or hotplate fire up your parrilla or fire pit. Heat up your grill or hotplate slightly and then coat in canola oil (any oil with a high smoke point can be used - olive oil is not recommended).
- Heat the grill or hotplate up over the hot coals and bake the oil into the steel for an hour or two. Then let cool.
- The process can be repeated a few times to build up the natural non-stick seasoning.
- If your grill or hotplate happens to form light surface rust you will simply need to use a scoring pad or similar to remove the rust and re-season your grill or hotplate.
- After normal use clean any stuck food from the grill or hotplate with a scraper and give a light coating of oil so it is ready for your next cook up. Don't use any detergents or degreasers to clean.
The more use and cycles your grill and hotplates are subject to the better the non-stick natural seasoning will become.
Tip: It can be beneficial to avoid acidic foods for a few cooks until the seasoning on the surface has thoroughly embedded itself into the surface.
Can I leave my parrilla or fire pit out in the weather?
To maintain your parrilla grill, store it in a covered area to shield it from the elements. If this is not feasible, it can be left outside, but it may weather more quickly. The paint on the parrilla is not covered against surface rust, and some surfaces may require touch-ups over time. Rust can be removed by sanding the area and applying high heat paint. Contact Benot for an exact paint match in a spray can if needed. Regular maintenance can keep your parrilla grill in good condition.
TIP: If the parrilla grill is stored outdoors, it is recommended to remove and store the grilling surfaces in a dry place to keep them in good condition for future use.
Cleaning and Maintenance
The painted surfaces can be cleaned with mild soap and water to remove grease and oil build-up from cooking. The surfaces can be treated with a quality food grade mineral oil to protect them.
After cooking, remove any food from the grilling surfaces and apply a coating of oil before lowering the grills over the heat. Once completely cooled, another coating of oil can be applied if needed.
The parrilla grill firebox has small holes located in the corners of the base to prevent water from pooling at the bottom. These holes can also be used to remove the firebricks if required. Using a small screwdriver or similar tool, gently push the firebrick from underneath through the drain hole and lift out the firebrick. Once one brick is removed, the rest can be lifted from above.
Can I give my parrilla or firepit a refresh?
The components of our parrilla grills can be easily replaced if necessary, ensuring a long useful life for the product. Contact Benot if you need parts for your parrilla grill, such as bearings, wire rope kits, firebricks, or paint.
